Work With Us
Welcome to Mutakalo
Mutakalo bridges ancient wisdom with modern innovation. We offer comprehensive services to transform individuals, communities, and organizations, rooted in holistic wellness, equity, and cultural integrity.
Our name, Mutakalo, originates from Tshivenda, one of South Africa's eleven official languages and a sacred vessel of indigenous knowledge. In its fullest expression, Mutakalo encompasses health, wholeness, and peace—three interconnected dimensions that cannot be separated.
This name was chosen with profound intention, serving as both a tribute and a commitment to the traditional healing practices, community wellness paradigms, and justice-based approaches that have sustained Diaspora communities for millennia while remaining vibrantly relevant in our contemporary moment.
We specialize in integrative health, education, development, and capacity-building. From community healing programs to corporate wellness strategies and public health policy, our work aims for sustainable impact.
We serve a diverse range of clients and communities, from grassroots organizations to international institutions. Our solutions are always tailored, effective, and deeply respectful of cultural contexts.
True transformation demands synthesizing knowledge systems, a commitment to justice, and the courage to bridge worlds. This is the essence of Mutakalo.

More About the Name: Mutakalo
The Doctor of Two Lands
Our guiding archetype is the Doctor of Two Lands, a figure who walks with equal fluency between worlds, serving as a bridge between the ancient and the modern, the local and the global, the intuitive and the empirical. This archetype embodies our fundamental approach: we do not choose between indigenous wisdom and contemporary expertise, but rather unite them in creative synthesis.
We honor the sangomas and traditional healers who have preserved ancestral knowledge across generations, while simultaneously engaging with advanced frameworks in public health, education policy, institutional development, and strategic planning. This dual fluency allows us to work effectively across multiple contexts, from remote rural communities where traditional healing remains the primary healthcare system to international development agencies requiring culturally competent program design to corporate environments seeking authentic wellness integration.
Mutakalo is led by Dr. Kathia Roberts, whose personal journey exemplifies this archetype in lived experience. Dr. Roberts has walked the paths of sangoma initiation in the sacred Maloti Mountains, while also serving on international health regulatory councils and educational committees, and teaching at the university level. She has facilitated healing circles in grassroots communities and advised government ministries on policy reform. She has developed traditional medicine curricula and designed corporate wellness programs for international organizations.
This rare combination of experiential knowledge and institutional expertise enables Mutakalo to serve authentically across the full spectrum, from the most traditional community contexts to the highest levels of organizational and governmental engagement. We understand the languages, protocols, and worldviews of multiple knowledge systems, and we bring them into respectful dialogue to create solutions that are both culturally grounded and strategically effective.
"True healing requires us to honor all the ways of knowing that humanity has developed. Mutakalo exists to ensure that ancient wisdom has a seat at every table where decisions about health, education, and development are being made."
— Dr. Kathia Roberts, Founder
About Dr. Kathia Roberts, PhD. ND. D.Phyt.
Dr. Kathia Roberts brings a uniquely integrative vision to the fields of education, health, and international development—one forged through more than two decades of immersive work across continents, knowledge systems, and organizational contexts. Her professional journey defies conventional categorization, weaving together roles as educator, traditional healer, public health strategist, curriculum architect, policy advisor, and community facilitator into a coherent practice of transformative leadership.
With a PhD in Integrative Medicine and Medicine Education, and professional Doctorates in Naturopathy and Phytotherapy (Herbal Medicine), and a certificate in collaboration with the World Health Organization in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Roberts has pioneered approaches to learning design that honor multiple epistemologies and create space for diverse ways of knowing. Yet her deepest education came not only from academic institutions but from her initiation and training in the Sangoma lineage of Southern Africa, the Mic Mac Ttribal Traditions of the Algonquins in Northern America and the Ecuadorian ancient traditions of Central America, where she spent years studying with master healers in the visited the remote Maloti Mountains, learning the sacred protocols of ancestral medicine, visioning, and community healing.
Traditional Healer
Initiated and trained in the Sangoma tradition of the Maloti Mountains, with deep knowledge of ancestral healing practices, plant medicine, and spiritual protocols
Academic Leader
Led curriculum development at the University of the Western Cape and Steiner College, designing innovative programs that bridge indigenous and contemporary knowledge
Regulatory Expert
Served on national health regulatory councils including Homeopathy, Phytotherapy, and Naturopathy boards, shaping policy and professional standards
Strategic Advisor
Provided consulting to nonprofit organizations, health institutions, and educational systems across multiple countries and continents
Dr. Roberts' institutional contributions are equally impressive. She has held board positions with health regulatory councils for Homeopathy, Phytotherapy, and Naturopathy, contributing to the governance structures that determine professional standards and practice parameters for these disciplines. This regulatory experience gives her unique insight into the challenges and opportunities of integrating traditional and complementary medicine within formal healthcare systems—knowledge that proves invaluable when advising governments and institutions on policy reform.
Her academic leadership includes curriculum development roles at the University of the Western Cape and Steiner College, where she designed innovative educational programs that challenge conventional pedagogical boundaries. She has also served as a strategic advisor to nonprofit organizations, health institutions, and educational systems across Africa, Europe, and the Americas, bringing her integrative perspective to bear on issues ranging from community health programming to organizational development to policy advocacy.
Beyond institutional contexts, Dr. Roberts has created numerous wellness products, facilitated healing summits and educational retreats, and taught extensively in the fields of Temple Arts and African Indigenous Medicine. These offerings represent the more intimate scale of her work—the direct transmission of healing knowledge through experiential learning, the creation of sacred spaces for transformation, and the development of tools and resources that individuals can use for their own wellness journeys.
What makes Dr. Roberts' contribution truly distinctive is her ability to move fluidly between these diverse worlds—to advise a government ministry on health policy integration in the morning and facilitate a traditional healing circle in the afternoon, to design academic curricula that meet institutional standards while preserving indigenous knowledge integrity, to speak the languages of both grassroots community organizing and international development frameworks. This versatility is not simply a matter of professional skills but reflects a deeper synthesis—a lived embodiment of the Doctor of Two Lands archetype that guides all of Mutakalo's work.

Mutakalo Foundation
The Mutakalo Education & Development Foundation is a Bermuda-registered nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering community healing, grassroots development, and ancestral health education. While our consultancy serves institutions and organizations, the Foundation focuses on direct community impact—creating programs and initiatives that serve those who might not otherwise have access to integrative health resources, educational opportunities, or culturally grounded development support.
Established with a commitment to accountability, transparency, and community-led development, the Foundation operates under the governance of a volunteer board comprised of respected Bermudian leaders who bring diverse expertise and deep commitment to the island's wellbeing. Our work extends to diaspora communities as well, recognizing that the wisdom traditions and healing practices we honor belong to people across geographies who maintain cultural connections to African and indigenous knowledge systems.
Our Mission
To support educational access, integrative healing, youth empowerment, and sustainable development through culturally rooted and community-led programs that honor ancestral wisdom while embracing contemporary innovation.
We believe that true development must be guided by those it serves—that communities hold the wisdom about what they need and how to create sustainable change. Our role is to provide resources, facilitate connections, create learning opportunities, and support community-driven initiatives rather than impose external solutions.
Our Vision
A healthy, awakened, and connected global community—grounded in ancestral wisdom and contemporary innovation—where every person has access to the resources, knowledge, and support needed to live with wholeness, purpose, and peace.

The Foundation's programmatic work focuses on five core areas, each designed to address specific community needs while contributing to our overarching vision of holistic community wellness:
